Paris – musical cross-roads

Few cities in the world hold such power of attraction, crystallize as much history, as many memories and myths. Few cities also concentrate within their walls such a strong source of inspiration for artists of all kinds. Paris is the indisputable and unchallenged cultural capital of the French-speaking world… that starts a few hundred metres from the Saanen church! But beyond this strong identity, this national if somewhat jingoistic pride, the city is nonetheless a fantastic mosaic of cultures, a cross-road of exchanges between Eastern and Western Europe, the first port of call – past and present – on the Old Continent for overseas travellers. Paris is magical and has lost none of the power of fascination that has defined it for centuries. Theodor Adorno did criticize the transformation of the city, perceiving in its streets both “the heart beats and heart aches”, “the euphoria and the solitude”. However, these paradoxes are a gift for musicians of all periods and since the Baroque era Paris has developed into a cosmopolitan metropolis of music, hustled by massive revolutions. It is widely admitted that the “DNA” of French music winds its way from Bizet, Saint-Saëns and Franck to Fauré, Ravel and Debussy… But is there truly a “French music”? Debussy had written “French musician” on the bottom of his business card, raising the question of the specifically French aspect of his work – a specific sound, according to Maestro Daniel Barenboim. Indeed, we often forget that although they write music, composers primarily have a mother tongue. But for Barenboim – who recently spoke about this in an article of the Welt -, this aspect should not be overestimated, evoking rather the colour of sounds, the perfume, the scents and reverie – totally characteristic of Romantic and Impressionist works – as being the true essence of French music. The works of several composers of our time seem to prove him right, for instance Bruno Soeiro and Sillages, Sons de Parfums, or the French composer Tristan Murail who, with Reflets/Reflections, the piece that the Gstaad Menuhin Festival commissioned for its 2019 edition, decided to paint with his musical palette the sounds of the Saanenland’s fascinating nature. Prime French musicians and orchestras will be attending the 63rd Gstaad Menuhin Festival, and we are also greatly looking forward to welcoming you this next summer 2019.
