Rameau au clavecin – Christophe Rousset
Chamber Music
Tuesday, 20 August 2019
7.30 pm, Rougemont Church
Rameau is considered to be the greatest French musician prior to the 19th century. Author of Treatises on Harmony that are still the reference today, he not only revolutionised lyrical art but also harpsichord music. At the keyboard as on the stage, diversity, surprise, contrast, are ever present. Begging the pardon of those who see in him the musical archetype of French classicism, movement that began in the early 17th century, favouring the quest for perfection and placing reason above all else. As Claude Debussy put it so well, “the need to understand – so rarely found in artists – is innate with Rameau”. Demonstration at the keyboard by one of the French Baroque scene’s favourites: Christophe Rousset.
