GALA Orchestral Concert

Sunday, 11 August 2019
6 pm, Saanen Church

Need one recall the major part played by Basler conductor Paul Sacher in supporting musical creation in the 20th century? It was thanks to him that Béla Bartók found a final moment of peace in summer 1939 just before his exile to the United States, where he was to die six years later. The mentor put his own Saanen chalet at his disposal so that he could compose, far from the sound of war, the Divertimento that Sacher had commissioned him for his Basler Chamber Orchestra.

Bartók also sketched out his sixth and final string quartet there, which he was to complete in Budapest and first-perform in New York in 1941. Eighty years later, this burst of inspiration was well worth a tribute over two concerts, right where it happened and, where the Divertimento is concerned, played by the successors of its original string performers.
