Nowadays considered a true demigod, it is hard to believe that Johann Sebastian Bach was the second choice when a new cantor was recruited for St Thomas's in 1723 following the death of Johann Kuhnau. And yet! The sources attest that the town councillors of the Saxon city would have preferred Georg Philipp Telemann or Johann Christoph Graupner, both of whom were retained at the very last moment by their respective princes thanks to a significant increase in their salaries. This programme, devised by recorder player Dorothee Oberlinger, invites us to revisit this famous competition musically, also including the work of Johann Friedrich Fasch, who was defeated in the final round by the great Johann Sebastian.
