(I/II) The opening concert of the 67th Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy sets the tone: humility … and grandeur! Humility of man faced with the immensity of the universe, the mystery of faith. And the greatness of the man who manages to transcend this humility in order to create a masterpiece, an emotion that he knows to be beyond him. Johann Sebastian Bach is such a man: humble in his earthly being, brilliant in his immaterial outreach – musical, emotional. His Mass in B Minor embodies the epitome of his genius: Catholic in form, Lutheran in spirit, the masterly culmination of decades of absolute devotion to Art and Faith … totally universal!
