Gate to the Future – Gstaad Festival Orchestra II Sol Gabetta & Jaap van Zweden
Symphony Concert
Saturday 14 August 2021
7.30 pm, Gstaad Festival Tent
For his second concert as conductor of the Gstaad Festival Orchestra – which he is also conducting for the third year as part of the Gstaad Conducting Academy – Jaap van Zweden will perform Brahms' Fourth Symphony and Elgar's sublime Concerto, led by a soloist of perfect intensity: Sol Gabetta. You may have been present when the cellist was playing in the same Gstaad Tent in 2013, alongside Andris Nelsons and the Birmingham Orchestra, the work glorified by Jacqueline du Pré. In the meantime, it will no doubt have gained in depth: an essential dimension in achieving the twilight nature of the score, written in the summer of 1919 when Elgar had composed virtually nothing since 1914, his spirit drained by the onslaught of the madness of war.
