Schubert's friend Leopold von Sonnleithner was right to describe the Fifth Symphony as “adorable” (“liebliche”): throughout its four movements, this score "free from drums and trumpets" exudes rare joy and freshness, carried by an already highly original style of writing for a young man of 19 years of age, far removed from the Biedermeier style trending at the time in the new bourgeois class triumphant in the wake of the Congress of Vienna. And what a magnificent idea on the part of Heinz Holliger and Gabriela Montero to add to this spring-like bouquet one of Mozart's most beautiful piano concertos: the 20th in D Minor and its sublime Romance... from which the Venezuelan pianist's improvised passages, heralded as a climax, may well be born.
