Eine Alpensinfonie – Mariinsky I
Symphony Concert
Friday, 24 August 2018
7.30 pm, Gstaad Festival Tent
They almost could be described as regulars at the Festival: Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra from St. Petersburg are once again in Gstaad for two extraordinary concerts. The first programme features Tchaikovksy’s First Piano Concerto with soloist Denis Matsuev, as well as a symphonic poem by Richard Strauss. His “Alpensinfonie” (An Alpine Symphony) is a marvel. Composed by a true mountain lover (Strauss owned a chalet in Garmisch in the Bavarian Alps where he often found refuge from the noise and stress of the world around him), the work is a wonderful depiction in tones (supported by a large number of instruments) of images such as a mountain hike, a sunrise, a menacing storm in the afternoon, a dark forest, the fresh mist of a waterfall or the heroic vision of the summit.
