Sol Gabetta & Francesco Piemontesi – Ich bin Bachianer” II – Humility & Models VII
Chamber Music
Tuesday, 25 July 2023
7.30 pm, Saanen Church
For the fourth and final part of his residency, Francesco Piemontesi will meet one of Gstaad Menuhin Festival's favourite artists, cellist Sol Gabetta, in a repertoire that suits her like a glove – the memory of her complete Beethoven sonatas and variations with Alexander Melnikov in 2020 and 2022 is still fresh in everyone's mind. Between Beethoven and Brahms, there is one composer who, as it were, bridges the gap between the last rays of classicism and romanticism: Felix Mendelssohn. With the Concertante Variations, which he dedicated in 1829 to his brother Paul – a brilliant banker but also a cellist – the young German composer paid (an unconscious) tribute to his illustrious compatriot Johann Sebastian Bach, whose St. Matthew Passion he revived that same year after a century of oblivion.
