“Die Winterreise” – Humility & Faith III

This is one of Schubert's major cycles, a truly spiritual testament: that of the “Wanderer” – the solitary wanderer, an iconic figure of German Romanticism – seized by fatigue and doubt in the cold of the (poetic) winter, for whom happiness is but memories and illusions. A global work in which the Viennese musician, at death's door himself, displays the full extent of his genius for Lieder – his repertoire par excellence – and which, for any performer, represents a kind of Holy Grail. With Matthias Goerne and Maria João Pires, exceptional Schubertians, we have two artists worthy of taking up the challenge of this overwhelming march towards the abyss.
