“Les Adieux” – Music for the Planet I – Gstaad Festival Orchestra I
Symphony Concert
Saturday, 5 August 2023
7.30 pm, Gstaad Festival Tent
Patricia Kopatchinskaja likes to say that fauna and flora were her first musical teachers. Seeing them threatened today is of great concern to her. With this programme and its evocative title – “farewell”, not “goodbye”! –, which brings together movements from Beethoven's “Eroica” and the “Pastoral” Symphony – one of the most beautiful renderings of the nature in the history of music –, Schumann's Violin Concerto and “Geistervariationen” – visionary works of a tightrope walker on the brink of the abyss –, and Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto, combined with video projections, the Moldavian violinist, who lives in Bern, wishes to appeal to the public as ambassador of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival's “Music for the Planet” programme, by setting in motion a great musical lament symbolising the threat hanging over all of our heads. With a sense of gravity, but without lapsing into apocalyptic pessimism.
