He is one of the great pianistic revelations of recent years. And for good reason: he has just won the 18th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition Warsaw 2021. The competition is held only once every five years and has launched the careers of some of the greatest pianists of our time. The 25-year-old Chinese-Canadian pianist Bruce Liu, whose full name is Bruce Xiaoyu Liu, has already made a name for himself, particularly in Montreal, where he moved with his family when he was only six years old and where he completed all his studies. He makes his debut in Gstaad with a programme (inevitably) centred around the composer with whom he captivated the jury and audience in Warsaw: Chopin. Deutsche Grammophon has already released the competition live recordings of his gripping Chopin interpretations. But Liu has also chosen music by Bach (in French mode), Liszt (with lyrical-virtuoso tones) and the delicate Miroirs of Maurice Ravel, an expression of the composer's impressionist period, for his first ever concert at Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy.
