6 pm, Gstaad Festival Tent
He should have celebrated his 80th birthday on July 25th on the stage of the Gstaad Festival Tent, but life decided otherwise. Since February 9th, Chick Corea has been sailing among the legends of jazz in total freedom, fortunately for us, leaving behind countless sound testimonies. The son of a jazz trumpeter who led a Dixieland band in Boston, on the surface being a child of Italian origin but early developing a deep understanding for the rhythms emerging from the neighborhoods of Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side of New York City, had taken up the piano at the age of four by his father and had not left it since then. Initially an avant-garde companion of the great Miles Davis, he had turned in the early seventies to a more “fusion” style, integrating more elements of Latin jazz. He then became interested in classical music, without ever denying all the heritage he carried within him. A true music encyclopedia… forever alive by his legacy!
