The Lied is one of the most iconic expression forms of Viennese music. You are undoubtedly familiar with several of the 600 or so opus that have been written by Franz Schubert, and perhaps a little less so with Beethoven's. Numbering more than eighty, these nevertheless span his entire creative career, with his first work written in Bonn when he was only 13 years old – Adelaide, on a text by Friedrich von Matthisson – and ultimate tributes a few years before his death – including the magnificent arietta Der Kuss [The Kiss] in 1822, on a poem by Christian Felix Weisse. The Hamburg tenor Daniel Behle, now living in Basel, is offering us a wide range of these, with accompaniment on Jan Schultsz's “historical” forte-piano.
