Two-hundred-and-fifty years separate Johann Sebastian Bach's First Sonata for Solo Violin and Shostakovich's only Sonata for Violin and Piano. Yet, in between the two, it is as if time had stood still, offering the performer and the audience room for meditation, “internal emigration” as Shostakovich would sometimes be referred to, to describe the strength of mind so powerful that the Russian musician was capable of deploying in order to ward off the wrath of the outside world. It takes all the conviction of exceptional artists to render these masterpieces to their true worth: Leonidas Kavakos and Yuja Wang are such artists.
