He caused a sensation last year in Beethoven's “The Emperor”: the Korean prize-winner of the last Warsaw Chopin Competition is returning to Gstaad with one of the monuments of the Romantic repertoire, Rachmaninov's Second Concerto. An emblematic work for its sublime slow movement, whose first bars were borrowed by Eric Carmen for his hit All By Myself, immortalized by Céline Dion’s supersonic interpretation! For his second concert at the head of the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Jaap van Zweden has chosen another pillar of Russian literature: Tchaikovsky's Fourth. A work embodied by the underlying presence of his new epistolary muse, Nadejda von Meck, to whom he promised to translate his “deepest feelings” into music. Mixed feelings, between the joy of being alive amid a people who “know how to have fun” and the “implacable fatum, a destiny that constantly reminds us of ourselves and shows us that “others do not care about [our person]”.
