Bach meets Gershwin
GALA Today's Music
Friday, 20 July 2018
7.30 pm, Saanen Church
The sheltered universe of classical music always seemed too narrow for him. After Yehudi Menuhin had led him to the heart of “great” music, Nigel Kennedy scored his first triumph with his recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for EMI. With more than 2 million albums sold, the recording earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful classical recording of all time. After a five-year pause that followed after a neck operation, he returned with “Revolution Pop-Rock-Jazz”. And he has continued to “stir things up” ever since. He comes for this concert with a truly varied bouquet: authentic Bach for violin solo, jazzy colors with Gershwin, and his own wonderful creation based on the story of the “Magician from Lublin”, a novel in Yiddish by Nobel Prize author Isaac Bashevis Singer.
