It is one of the highlights of violin literature, a kind of absolute. There is everything in Johann-Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas: simplicity and complexity, serenity and impetuosity – the violin from A to Z, and genius on top of that. As cantor of the counterpoint, Bach not only brings the violin to light in its familiar surroundings – the melody – but also forces it to think “construction-wise” by adorning the statement with a second or even third part. We should not forget that he was himself an excellent violinist: after his stay at the Court of Weimar (between 1703 and 1717) and his encounter with one of the greatest figures of the polyphonic style adapted to the violin, Johann Paul von Westhoff, double strings no longer held any secrets from him. It takes an exceptional performer to tackle it, to dare to lay oneself “bare” in front of the audience as well as the music, and to do it – what's more – in one fell swoop. Isabelle Faust is of this caliber. A moment that should not be missed under any circumstances.
